Charbonnières, coal scuttles to you and I, or Toads (Crapaud) as they are commonly known in France are fascinating things. They are mostly from around the turn of the 20th century and were made by most of the founderies though often mot marked sadly. They are generally egg shaped inside and solid cast iron so not to confused with their lighter upright counterparts which are commonly seen. Very decorative and generally enamelled like their stoves, they will absolutely set off your stove and become a real talking point. If you no longer use coal don’t think you can’t have one. think outside the box. the last two we have sold have had very alternative uses; one was bought to use as a loo paper holder and the other was going to be used to keep the dog food in! Who knows what you could use one for. I thought I would give them names instead of reference numbers for a bit of fun. Which one would suit you?
